It’s an art!

The art of creating music, whatever your choice of genre may be, will always be tied to a work ethic and knowledge base that is crucial to develop before you start to produce.

Don’t forget that the process is the important part, not the end result. If you follow this, your sounds will be polished and sharp.

The ear of the listener has been carefully trained by legends of the past to expect certain things.

One of my favorite quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche says:

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.”

So let’s get to it!

1. Choose your weapon

All the seasoned producers have tried multiple Digital Audio Workstations (DAWS) and have found what best suits their needs. You need to do the same. Explore some top programs like Ableton Live, FL Studio, Cubase, and SONAR. It would be advantageous to try a free DAW before you jump into these dense applications. Each DAW has it’s one unique beauty. Ableton Live may appeal more to the improviser, while Cubase stimulates the control freaks.

2. Play First, Work Later

Ok, you found your DAW! Now enjoy this moment. Open a random instrument, explore its features. Spend hours getting lost in the manipulation of sound itself. At this point in your journey, you will be learning constantly. Keep an open mind. Making mistakes is important! They will turn into unique creations that shape your authentic style. Throw caution to the wind, your voice is in those speakers, let it scream!

3. Learn from the best

Rather than reinvent the wheel, look up some online courses from the best in the business. They all started out where you are now. This is a great way to sharpen your skills and learn with important aspects of music production such as mixing, mastering, developing melodic structures, DJing, and more. Dubspot Offers online programs (with a certificate upon completion) that will help you master your Workstation. If you chose Ableton Live, The Deadmau5 Masterclass is a crazy romp through the brain of an EDM icon. You will learn how to integrate random improvisation and surgical precision into fat, swelling chord progressions no one can resist bumping with.

4. Someone else’s Headphones

Post a few rough cuts on SoundCloud. It’s important to see the reactions of someone who isn’t biased in your favor. Your friend who works at the pizzeria might say it sounds dope, but many agree that the reactions of anonymous users are the invaluable compass for how good your beats really sound. Throughout the length of the song, users can comment at any point in the progression. Pay attention to this input! People might love something you didn’t really consider to be important.

5. Trust Thy Self

Music Production can put your brain into sensory overload. Waves and numbers can get out of control, and sometimes the visual aspect detracts from the thing that matters: THE MUSIC. Although it seems silly, turn off your monitor screen once in a while. Close your eyes and simply listen to the music. The most complicated thing in the world is keeping things SIMPLE. But that’s the key. Make it habit to detach from the buzz and try to experience the song for the first time.
